Get Ready to Play Fantasy Card Games in Mixed Reality

Card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, and the like have offered engaging fantasy worlds for players—but not without significant help from their imaginations. Video games and cartoons may have helped build these worlds, but mixed reality finally offers an opportunity to make the player's imagination real.

You can see a very early peek into the possibilities in the video above from developer and YouTuber Generalkidd.

Ever since I was little, I was quite fascinated about the prospect of being able to play Yugioh in real life with actual holograms. Well, thanks to Microsoft's HoloLens, that is now finally possible. This is just a very early version of this game and there's a lot of work that still needs to be done.

As noted, this is a very minimal demonstration of what a mixed reality card game could look like. If you've ever seen the cartoons and video games often created alongside the cards, however, you know where this is headed. No longer will players have to imagine battles through representative, 2D imagery. In a mixed reality environment, battles can take place in the real world much like they were originally imagined by the game creators and players alike.

We've got a ways to go before anyone will be playing Yu-Gi-Oh! in the HoloLens, of course, but it is coming. We already know the Pokémon company is interested in this kind of technology, and more complex games already exist on the HoloLens platform. So it's only a matter of time.
